WHAT IS THAT MASSIVE, HUGE, MONDO, MAJOR BOAT?

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5

A day motor just doesn’t sound as good as a day sail but that is what we did.  It was a windy one but we went out and found a spot to anchor out of the wind and waves.  Unfortunately we have found that our GPS chart plotter does not have great maps of Kentucky Lake.  We left Marley at the dock so did not have a reconnaissance vessel along.  Despite that, we found a nice spot on the east side of the lake to anchor.  Had a bite to eat and while it was nice, we were not seeing much in the way of wildlife.  Then a HUGE ship started to come into view.

Not one of us had ever seen a ship like this before.  Broke out the binoculars and determined that this was the Delta Mariner, Port Canaveral, FL - a ship designed specifically to haul Atlas and Delta rockets and rocket parts for United Launch Alliance.  This ship is “infamous” in these parts because it hit and took out a bridge in 2012 right here on Kentucky Lake.  Here’s a little information on this “infamous” ship!  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Delta_Mariner
That was the highlight of our day.  What timing to be sitting here as it goes by on its’ way to lock through Kentucky Dam.  I mean the thing is a behemoth and was something to see.
Back to the dock and had a little lunch before Becky and Jimmy headed back to Tennessee.  Sorry to see our friends go but know we'll be seeing them again soon.  What a nice time we had with them!  Here's a few more scenes from the marina.  One thing that is interesting here is that the marina residents all ride around on golf carts. We have seen that at other marinas but here they actually ride them all the way out the piers!  There is a whole fleet of golf carts in the parking lot.

John took a nap and I started in on the laundry.  Then we took a nice bike ride just up to the Kentucky Dam, had leftovers for dinner and off to bed.  It was nice to just kick back and relax a bit.
